Portuguese Nationality

For the Registration of Births for the purpose of acquiring Portuguese Nationality for those born in the former Portuguese state of Goa, the following is the process

• Portuguese Nationality can be applied for by any individual born in Goa before 19 Dec 1961.
• or an individual whose parents or parent was born in Goa before 19 Dec 1961.
• or an individual whose grandparents or grandparent was born in Goa before 19 Dec 1961.
• In cases where the Person\Parent(s)\Grand Parent(s) was born outside of Goa but whose birth was registered in Goa before 19 Dec 1961, the same can be used for the application process.
• The Birth certificate and the Registo de Nascimento of such a person (s) will be required as the primary document for the purpose of birth registration in Portugal.
• In addition to the Birth certificate (Registo de Nascimento) of the primary document, 2 supporting documents issued in Goa before 19 Dec 1961, of the person will be required, such as the parent’s births, parent’s marriage or the Para Viagem document or the Old Portuguese Passport document of the primary registrant.
• If the Primary registrant is deceased, then the death certificate of the primary registrant will be required to be submitted with the process.
• Once the Birth certificate or the Registo de Nascimento of the Primary registrant (born before 19 Dec 1961) has been registered, the process follows the path of citizenship by descent wherein the marriage and subsequent birth and marriage records of every generation are registered till the generation of the current applicant.  While registering a marriage, the birth certificate of the non-registered spouse will be required for the registration process.
